Egypt World Cup 2018: World Cup History
Egypt is back to the World Cup championship for the third time. Their past two appearances were back in 1934 and 1990. However, they have yet to win a game at the World Cup finals.
Outside of the World Cup, the Egypt team has quite an impressive track record. Ask any Egyptian and they will be proud to discuss their record-breaking seven time winner of the African Cup of Nations.
However, until recently, the Pharaohs have not been doing so well at football. They failed to qualify for the African Cup of Nations from 2012 to 2015, which they had once dominated. Things began to look up when Egypt became the first African team to qualify for the World Cup finals.
The Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi was so proud that he gave a bonus of $US85,000 to each of the players.
Unfortunately, the team has some way to go before they redeem themselves. In past five friendly matches, Egypt only managed one draw and suffered 4 losses.
Egypt World Cup 2018: Team
The team is led by Mohamed Salah from Liverpool. The talented 25-year old player scored five goals in six games during Egypt’s qualifying campaign, including a late penalty that took the country to the World Cup.
He also scored 44 goals for Liverpool last season, including 11 goals during his UEFA Champions League appearances. As a feather in his cap, Salah was also named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year in April.
In a dramatic turn of events, Salah suffered a shoulder injury in the Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid. Fans all over Egypt cried as the odds Egypt win World Cup 2018 stood at stake. However, the Egyptian FA announced that it is a “sprain in the shoulder ligaments” while Salah tweets, “Despite the odds, I’m confident that I’ll be in Russia to make you all proud.”
Salah is joined by five other English league players too, including Ahmed El Mohamedi who plays for Aston Villa, Ahmed Hegazi from West Bromwich Albion, Ramadan Sobhi from Stoke City, Mohamed Elneny from Liverpool and Sam Morsy from Wigan Athletic.
Another notable member of Egypt’s squad is Essam El-Hadary, the team’s 45 year old goalkeeper. He will be the oldest player for this year’s FIFA World Cup, beating the previous record held by 43-year old Farid Mondragonam of Colombia, who played in 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Coach, Hector Cuper from Argentina rounds off the team with his defensive strategy.
