Sweden World Cup 2018: World Cup History

Sweden rocked Europe when they won 1-0 in a play-off against Italy and booked a spot at Russia 2018. Italy has featured in the finals 18 times and lifted the trophy on four occasions—on par with Germany and behind only Brazil. It is their first failed qualification in 60 years! So, how did the lesser-accomplished nation of Sweden beat them to Russia 2018?

Sweden has made it to the World Cup finals 11 times, including four appearances at semi-final level. It is their first time back in the finals since 2006, having failed to qualify in the last two games (2010 and 2014).

On history alone, the odds Sweden win World Cup 2018 are not too shabby. They aren’t exactly in the running for the trophy, but they have definitely got a chance to get past group stage against Germany, Mexico and Korea Republic. More detail on Sweden World Cup 2018 odds below.

Sweden World Cup 2018: Squad

Midfielders: Sebastian Larsson (Hull), Albin Ekdal (Hamburg), Emil Forsberg (RB Leipzig), Gustav Svensson (Seattle Sounders), Oscar Hiljemark (Genoa), Viktor Claesson (Krasnador), Marcus Rohden (Crotone), Jimmy Durmaz (Toulouse).

Forwards: Marcus Berg (Al Ain), John Guidetti (Alaves), Ola Toivonen (Toulouse), Isaac Kiese Thelin (Waasland-Beveren).

It is Sweden’s first major tournament without their superstar striker, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Manchester United striker recently retired after Euro 2016. His career was a successful one, including 62 goals in 116 games for his country. Fans were waiting at the edge of their seat for him to come out of retirement for this tournament, but alas, Ibrahimovic will not be doing so.

So Ibrahimovic is out of the picture. Coach Janne Andersson joined the team (also after Ibrahimovic’s retirement) and has rebuilt the team. His efforts has been quite successful so far, considering that famous play-off win over Italy…

Anderson credits their success to good team organization. There’s Marcus Berg, who has replaced Ibrahimovic as Sweden’s main attacker. Then, there’s goalkeeper Robin Olsen to shut out all of their opponents’ goal attempts and team captain Andreas Granqvist with his aggressive tackle skills. (Granqvist was awarded Guldbollen, or the Golden Ball trophy in 2017.)

Jakob Johansson is another famous name, especially after he scored that defining goal against Italy.

As Anderson puts it, “We have a good group, a good team and we work hard together. We are also tactically smart and we have to be that way no matter who we play. We are strong together.”

No individual player stands out as the superstar (like Messi for Argentina), but the odds on Sweden winning 2018 World Cup are as strong as it is, thanks to this squad.
