Holiday makers and travellers both international and domestic embarking on routes either with Virgin Australia or Qantas airlines are now able to use their mobile phone and any other electronic devices during flight.
No restrictions
Tablets, hand-held game consoles, e-readers and of course smartphones can all now be used during flight with no restrictions. In the past, passengers have been ordered to switch off radio transmissions of all of these devices whilst flying for safety reasons.
Although some airlines operating within Europe, The US and New Zealand already allow phone usage on their craft the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approved both Australian airlines requests earlier this week.
New technology
With today’s aviation technology aircraft are designed and built with electrical interference in mind. This enables technology, especially electrical devices, to be used on flights without interference.
For passengers this means that they can compose emails and play games during take-off and landing. However, during safety briefs phones will be required to be put on silent, flight-mode or switched off.
Stow away
However, large electronic devices such as laptops will still have to be stowed away before take-off and landing mainly because of turbulence issues.
One sticking points for some passengers will be the fact that fellow passengers will, in the near future, be able to speak on their phone during flight. The technology is available today but not economically viable as yet. Neither airline has invested heavily in the technology as yet.
The reason in-flight calls are still not the norm in commercial flight is due to the high cost of satellite phone connections.
However, trials for in-flight calls have been tested by Qantas between Sydney and Melbourne with lots of costs attached and how these costs are recouped remains to be seen.
