Not long ago we reported on the news that Three Mobile had finally provided Wi-Fi services for their users on the London Underground. Now more than 100 stations allow mobile phone users to access the internet through their own networks at subterranean stations.

Calls for change

Still, passengers on the world’s oldest underground today are without the ability to make calls during their journey.

However, we can now reveal that plans are afoot for possible mobile phone communications to be installed across the entire London underground network meaning commuters could actually make calls whilst travelling under the capitals busy streets.

New systems

The reports emerge as plans drawn up by Transport for London detail that commuter’s will be able to use their mobile phones on the new Crossrail rail link which is currently Europe’s largest building project with the aim to link up the west and east of the city.

Transport for London are investigating ways in which to provide data for its Crossrail customers before the project is finished in 2018. It is hoped the £15 billion Crossrail project will include the necessary systems to enable commuters to make and receive calls meaning London will be on par with many major European cities such as Rome and Paris which currently have the technology in use.

It is hoped, all things going well, that this technology can then be used on the older underground system.

Works up north

Interestingly, further up north in the UK, passengers using both Newcastle and Glasgow’s underground can already make and receive calls on those systems.

The call to plug this technology gap by Transport for London is further fuelled by members of the London Assembly who collated a report pushing tube bosses to install more technology underground.

The report also stated that mobile communication on one of the world’s busiest underground systems was not a luxury but a requirement for a world leading city.

Innovative ideas

Other technological ideas for the underground such as commuters being able to order coffee on the train for them to pick up on disembarkation is being considered.
