Bookies start sweating as weather bets begin to burn

As forecasters predict that the heat wave is set to last even longer, Britain’s bookmakers fear their liabilities on the mercury hitting 100F could soon reach as high as £1million.

Punters in the UK continue to place their bets on the unexpected bout of hot weather to the extent where many large gambling companies have been forced to cut their odds. The big betting brand Coral has had to cut their odds on the rare 100F several times last week, being severed from 10-1 to an astonishing 4-1.

Bets include the UK temperature to reach 100F in 2013, the UK record temperature in 2013, and the hosepipe ban anywhere in the UK in 2013.

According to experts, the UK is obsessed with the weather due to its unpredictable nature and its infamous deliverance of rain and cloud in supposedly hot seasons. Approximately 70% of us check the weather forecast at least once a day, with many of us stereotypically using it regularly in conversation. This is one reason why the amount of weather related bets have drastically increased over the last couple of weeks.

Many claim that the convenience of being able to gamble or play mobile games on your mobile wherever you are means more punters than ever are tempted to make a light hearted bet. Not only that, but according to statistics many have been driven inside by the hot weather to their computers due to the unbearable temperatures.

With many large retailers such as Amazon and Waitrose reporting rocketing profits of up to 900%, it seems that betting sites are some of the only people not benefiting from the heat wave.
