Royal Birth Biggest Bet in the History of Non-Sporting Gambling

As the nation discusses their predictions on what the Royal Duchess of Cambridge’s new born is to due be called, gambling experts claim the birth is going to be the biggest, non-sporting event in history to attract bets in such volume and variation.

Bets apparently have been made on everything from eye colour to weight, as people from all over the world hazard a guess on what characteristics the baby will be likely to have.

The most popular bet so far has been the name of the baby, with James being the nation’s favourite. At 2/1, this popular prediction among betting folk takes the top of the leader board, with George and Harry in second place at 5/1. Perhaps surprisingly unpopular names are Charles and Phillip however, with those who bet on the latter expecting to take home 40 times their bet.

Interestingly, before the announcement most punters put their bets on the royal baby being a girl, popular names being Alexandra at 9/4 and Charlotte at 5/1. However, the announcement on Monday of a boy resulted in a huge influx of new bets, with between 20% and 30% of the entire bets placed on the royal new born made after the duchess went into labour.  Paddy Power also reported taking nearly £400,000 in bets in the first three hours after the news hit the headlines.

Businesses are expecting to keep seeing the benefits of the birth as more royal news is announced connected with the new born and the regal lifestyle. Over the past three days, Filthy Rich Slots has seen a surprising soar in players, reflecting the fact that many have seemingly been influenced by the exposure of the royal family lately.

Though the Duke and Duchess are reportedly choosing personal names rather than traditional names, the betting reflects the fact that many predict the royal name will be in keeping with regal convention.
