If you’ve explored the games on offer here at Fortune Frenzy, you’ll no doubt have noticed that on top of a massive selection of slots, we feature a number of casino games to help keep you entertained. An integral part of our casino offering is our roulette, which we believe is the cornerstone of any great casino – online, mobile or land-based. Chances are, if you’re a gambler, you probably have at least a working knowledge of how to play roulette, but just in case you missed that day at casino school, we’re going to use this post to run through the basics of the game, and how best to approach it.
Basic Outline Of Roulette
Roulette is a game of chance. A ball is sent round a spinning, numbered wheel, and the game is won by correctly guessing one or more of the attributes of the number the ball finally comes to rest on. There are two elements to the roulette setup: the betting table – where you lay your chips which indicate which numbers you want to bet on – and the wheel – which is used to decide the winning number. There are three distinct parts of a game of roulette: the betting, the spin, and the payout.
Roulette is a complete game of chance (yes, it bears repeating). There’s often a misconception around roulette that because the player has so much choice as to how to bet, there’s in fact some way to judge the next number to land on the wheel – a misconception aided by the fact many casinos will display a spin history. In reality, each spin is completely independent of all the others, and there’s absolutely no discernible way to work out how the wheel might behave in the future. Remembering that it’s a total shot in the dark is important for not getting too sucked into the game.
The Betting Table And Wheel
As previously stated, online roulette has two components: the betting table and the wheel. The wheel displays the numbers one to 36, each coloured either red or black. In the European version of the game, there is an additional 0 on the board, whereas in the American version, there is both 0 and 00. Each number sits in its own groove in the wheel, and when the ball is sent round the spinning wheel, it will come to rest in one of these grooves, deciding the winning number.
The betting table displays each of the numbers on the wheel, laid out in a 3×12 grid (with the addition 0 and 00 added on the end). Before the wheel is spun and the ball sent round, players around the table place chips on the table in positions which they think will pay out. The great thing about roulette, is that you don’t have to necessarily guess the exact number to come up to still be able to cash in on any given spin. There’s a number of different ways to bet which can improve your chances of a win…
Types Of Roulette Bets
There are two main types of bets on roulette: inside – where you bet on specific numbers or groups of numbers on the table – and outside bets – where you bet on attributes of numbers, or where they fall in relation to the betting table.
Inside Bets
Inside bets allow you to place your chips on specific numbers, or groups of specific numbers, with an increasing payout for increasing specificity. The inside bets you can make (and their payouts) are as follows:
- Single number bet: placing your chips on a single specific number will give you a payout potential of 35 to 1
- Split bet: splitting your chips across the border of two adjoining numbers will give you a payout potential of 17 to 1
- Street bet: betting along a long segment of the betting table will give you a payout potential of 11 to 1
- Corner bet: straddling your bet across 3 or 4 numbers on the corners of each will give you a payout potential of 8 to 1
- Six line bet: betting across the borders of two streets and two numbers will give you a payout potential of 5 to 1
Outside Bets
Outside bets allow you to bet on attributes of numbers, such as whether the winning number will be black or red, or odd or even. The outside bets you can make (and their payouts) are as follows:
- Odd or Even bet: choosing whether the winning number will be odd or even offers a winning potential of 1 to 1
- Red or Black bet: choosing which of the two colours the winning number will be offers a payout potential of 1 to 1
- High or Low bet: guessing whether the winning number will be 18 or lower, or 19 or higher offers a payout potential of 1 to 1
- Dozen bet: picking which dozen you think the winning number will belong to (1 – 12, 13 – 24, or 25 – 36) offers a payout potential of 2 to 1
