Don’t get us wrong, we love NetEnt. The Swedish software developer has provided us here at Fortune Frenzy with a ton of not just decent but excellent games. That includes the likes of Starburst, Gonzo’s Quest, Motörhead and Spiñata Grande. Even what could be considered their mediocre titles aren’t all that bad. But their latest slot — set for release in August 2017 — may prove to be the first truly “bad” slot that they’ve put out in a while.
In case you haven’t already guessed, that slot’s name is Emoji Planet. Yes, you read that right. Emojis. It’s still a month until April Fool’s day so it’s no joke. “And how,” we hear you say, “can you possibly make a slot out of a bunch of cartoon expressions on a computer screen?” That is a very good question.
The Emoji Movie
We do not believe that it’s a coincidence that NetEnt are bringing out the Emoji Planet slot in August alongside the Emoji Movie. What, you didn’t know there was going to be an Emoji Movie? Neither did we. But apparently Hollywood is so bereft of ideas that it has to resort to cartoon emotions to make a piece of entertainment that will occupy your six-year-old for a couple of hours.
The concept is so shallow and so desperately trying to keep up with the times that by next year it will already have become dated — that is, if it hasn’t been forgotten already. So you can understand why we’re a little worried for Emoji Planet. We honestly believed NetEnt were above this sort of thing, always overflowing with ideas. Even their TV advert for the slot seems half-baked.
It features a guy waking up to his normal, everyday life to find everything and everyone is slowly turning into an emoji. We don’t know about you, but that sounds absolutely terrifying. Imagine going to feed your dog only to realise he’s turned into a horrifying 2D rendition of a dog that you wouldn’t even find in today’s children’s cartoons!
Why Does This Exist?
Honestly, we don’t know. All we can fathom out of it is that NetEnt needed some more money so decided to cash in on something they thought would be extremely profitable. Whether it will be or not remains to be seen. On the other hand, we do have enough faith in NetEnt to hold out hope this slot will not be terrible.
At best, it will be just okay. The wisest thing NetEnt could do would be to just make all the slot reel symbols of Emoji Planet into different emojis. Maybe even make the poo emoji a wild! We think there’s little point trying to make a plot out of this idea, as Sony has done with the Emoji movie. It would be like trying to make a movie out of the alphabet — entertaining for two-year-olds, dull as dishwater for everyone else.
Just using the iconography would be good enough. We know little about Emoji Planet’s actual features so we’ve got out fingers and toes crossed that NetEnt won’t come out with a complete disaster. Either way, you can be sure to find it in our gaming library here at Fortune Frenzy!
