Giant casino complex cancelled over policy clashes

Plans to create a huge casino complex near Madrid have been cancelled over disputes between developers and the Spanish authorities.

The creation of the casino complex, named Eurovegas, has been completely put to a hault as the developers of the project Las Vegas Sands have apparently been met with too many restrictions.

Eurovegas was due to create up to 250,000 jobs, which made it a particularly strong selling point Computer-generated images of the 'EuroVegas' gambling complex and conference centre outside Madridfor the Spanish authorities as their unemployment rate is currently at a considerable 27%.

The large scale casino complex project was predicted to cost approximately $30bn and to include six casinos, twelve hotels and a variety of high end shops.

However, in order for the plans to go ahead the Spanish authorities would have to agree to a variety of points that the US company insisted on implementing at the enormous casino complex. These included a lower tax on gambling, exemption from the smoking ban and insurances against future changes in Spanish policy that could impact on potential profits.

The Spanish authorities had to decline the demands “which could not be taken on board by the administrations involved” which therefore put a stop to the large scale casino project.
