The social networking site Facebook has come out in the top most-searched for terms for 2013 in the UK.
Yesterday Google revealed its list of the most searched-for terms in the UK, with Facebook coming first and Google’s own brand name coming third.
News sites and online shops were also in the top ten, with sites such as eBay, Amazon and Argos all appearing, as well as BBC News and the Daily Mail.
Facebook’s position came as no surprise to Chris Green, an analyst at the Davies Murphy Group consultancy, as he explained that “Facebook has now firmly established itself as a hub on the internet, making it a destination for surfers to do multiple tasks such as communications, gaming, shopping, photo-sharing and information gathering.”
The data for the most searched-for terms is accumulated through collecting the number of times a word or phrase is typed into Google.
Worldwide Trends
The investigation also reported on what trended on the search engine throughout 2013, which often reflected a variety of landmark events during the year. Notable deaths such as Nelson Mandella’s and Paul Walker’s came first and second, with Margaret Thatcher also featuring highly in the list.
Products and launches also made Google’s top ten list of worldwide trends, for example, the iPhone 5s, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the PlayStation 4. These search terms reflect the nation’s increasing interest in technology, and how the mobile and gaming market is continuing to expand.
