Finally, the long-timed rumoured smartphone by Amazon has now more or less been confirmed as real by an inside analyst with a reputation for getting most things right in this highly fluid market.
So far, the word is that Amazon will ship the device at the end of Q4 this year, meaning smart phone enthusiasts and the curious amongst us will have to wait that little bit longer before we get our paws on it.
At Sixes and Sevens
More interestingly however is the news that the phone will house SIX, yes SIX cameras! With the main camera being a beefy Sony 13MP model, Amazon have only gone and stuck a reported five more cameras around the device. Amazon wants the device to monitor and track all of the user’s movements to provide accurate gesture controls with the view being that the phone can be operated without being handled. Marvellous idea we say.
The big question on our lips though is just how Amazon’s device will fit into this already hugely saturated smartphone market? Apart from the reported multiple camera set up, will Amazon’s new smartphone be able to offer anything different to what’s already on offer? It remains to be seen if Amazon’s multiple camera set-up will add any real value to the user experience. After all, the current Samsung Galaxy Note 3 can handle gesture swipes with just the one front-facing camera, heck even the now-forgotten-about Galaxy S3 can deal with hand gestures. So, maybe Amazon has something else up its sleeve with regards to the camera use, true panoramic shots perhaps? We hope so.
Punching above its weight?
Whilst having all those cameras on board is intriguing and potentially exciting, the phone will of course have be able to pack enough processing punch to handle all that hardware and software. Apparently it won’t disappoint in that department. The phone is reported to be featuring a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 ARM quad-core processor which is more than enough to power the cameras and, incidentally, its rather large 4.7 inch HD screen, perfect for a spot of American Roulette when you’re not snapping several camera shots all at once or reading the latest Kindle release.
No doubt, Amazon has its work cut out. Sure, the novelty factor will help sales on launch what with the cameras and Kindle being key factors in that determinate but taking on the might of Samsung and Apple is a monumental task, just ask HTC.
