Classic video games from the 70s and the 80s have been released online for free by the Internet Archive.
The retro collection of games comes from five vintage home consoles released as early as thirty five years ago. The collection is due for further expansion, as more games and features such as sound is expected to be added.
The Atari 2600 and the Colecovision are just two examples of the consoles that have been revived online.
The head archivist Jason Scott wrote that “making these vintage games available to the world, instantly, allows for commentary, education, enjoyment and memory for the history they are a part of.”
Fans of retro games can expect to be able to play all of the classics, with well known titles such as Pacman, Space Invaders and Frogger all available within the archive.
Fallen into disuse
Most of the games available within the collection were abandoned by the gaming masses partly due to the bespoke cartridges the games had for storage. The consoles fell into disrepair after new products were launched, and became rarer when games could be downloaded or stored on disk.
However, thanks to smartphone gaming and other technological advancements in the industry, it is now possible for publishers to revive old titles in order to restore the games that nostalgic players love.
