It has been confirmed by a spokesperson of Aldi that their very first tablet has completely sold out in all stores, after having only launched the new device days ago.
The release of Aldi’s Medion Lifetab, which only launched at the weekend, comes after the success of the Tesco Hudl which has sold over 300,000 units since it went on sale in September.
Both Tesco’s Hudl and Aldi’s Medion Lifetab use the Android operating system and have 7 inch screens. Aldi’s Lifetab has 8GB of built-in memory, a 1.6GHz quad-core processor and retails at £80, whereas the Hudl has 16GB of built-in memory, a 1.5GHz quad-core processor and costs £119.
Both tablets face competition from other 7 inch devices on the market which tend to be more expensive. The Google Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini from Apple both retail between £200 to £350, making Tesco and Aldi’s devices the more affordable choice for buyers.
According to IDC’s Research Director for mobile devices Francisco Jerinomo, the difference in price doesn’t necessarily mean one will be more popular than the other. Buyers looking for a more affordable tablet from Supermarkets and high street shops such as Argos will be after inexpensive entertainment on the move. “Most parents don’t want to spend £300 – £500 on a device that will mainly be used to play games, to watch movies and a few other educational applications,” he added.
In contrast to these consumers, those looking to buy a more expensive tablet will be looking for the latest features available within the industry.
