Chip-maker Nvidia has designed a brand new mobile processor that is destined to provide the best airplay-2011-06-16gaming experience yet, with its graphics being of an even better quality than consoles such as the Xbox 360 or the PlayStation 3.

The new processor, named the Tegra K1 has a total of 192 graphics processing unit cores which are based on the same Kepler technology that can be found in many of the firm’s high-end PC components.

Jen-Hsun Huang, the California-based chief executive, describes the Tegra K1 as the next generation of mobile gaming graphics.

The revolutionary chip offers a substantial increase in power and outperforms most of the last generation of consoles, whilst taking 5% less battery power.

Having kept a close eye on the expanding mobile gaming industry, the creation of the K1 is Nvidia’s latest step to move into the industry even further. The firm hope that the chip’s increased graphical capacity will entice more manufacturers as the sector continues to expand.

There will be two versions of the chips available for manufacturers, the first of which will be optimised for using in self-driving cars and the second consisting of 64-bit architecture usually found in PCs. These types of processors allow computers to use more memory with far more efficiency, with future smartphones and tablets expected to take advantage of these new technological advancements.

Apple products such as the iPhone 5s and the iPad Air are currently powered by technology based on a 64-bit design, though Mr Huang argues that the K1 will be triple the power of Apple’s design.
