Now then, we all like to watch or play sport from time to time, but I’ve got a list of some new ones for you to try.
So, get a few mates together, have a few beers to get in the mood, and get stuck in! Well, maybe you shouldn’t try the first one. Crikey!
Baby Jumping
I would have to say that this was probably the most surprising of all the sports I was able to find for this blog. Surprising and dangerous in equal measure!
Held every year in the village of Castrillo de Murcia, men take turns to jump over newborn babies lined up on the middle of the road.
You’ll be happy to hear that in the interests of health and safety the men involved take the precaution of dressing up as the devil.
Phew, well that’s reassuring to know. We can all sleep well tonight knowing that!
If you want to check out this weird ‘sport’, then it’s official name is El Salto del Colacho.
Bobbing for pigs’ feet
This epic sport of skill, stamina, reflexes, and strength started in 2006 at the inaugural Red Neck Games (Georgia, USA) – a more sophisticated version of the Olympics!
Competitors must dip their heads into a bucket of water and be the first to remove all the pig’s feet contained within.
In recent years the sport has been blighted by accusations of steroid abuse, corruption, and spiraling pay-per-view prices. The previous sentence is, of course, untrue.
Pig grunting imitation
Sticking with the theme of pigs, we go to Paris, France where they have the Pig Grunting World Championships. This is a real annual tournament where participants must imitate a pig grunting.
The entire championship was thrown into disarray when it was revealed that the 2014 winner was actually just someone in the audience trying to clear their throat of phlegm!
The man in question has since gone to court in a bid to keep his title and prize money. Do you believe me? 😉
Kabaddi
Now then, for me this sport brings back memories of my childhood. I never played it, and I want to make that very clear, but I did use to watch it on television.
I remember being glued to the TV on a Sunday afternoon in a state of utter confusion as I watched this so called sport.
From what I remember there would be a group of four or five men holding hands and they would be matched against one lone opponent.
The individual player had to approach the group, get close, and tag one of them. After that the group would jump on top of him and they would all roll around together in the dirt for a few minutes and then start all over again.
I’m sure fans of the sport will be cursing my name for getting the rules wrong, but in all honesty, that is what I remember happening.
If you want to find out the actual rules of Kabaddi then check out the official rules and variations of the game.
Battle of the Oranges
Held in the Italian city of Ivrea every year – or should that be Ivrea year? 😉 – this competition involves two organised teams throwing thousand of kilograms of oranges at each other in a sticky battle.
It is said to have started way back in the 12th or 13th Century, so it must be popular to still be going now!
Other variations include the tomato fight festival (La Tomatina) in Spain, and apparently a version took place in Ireland using… potatoes! Sorry Ireland, you know I love you!
