Seeing as the Formula One season is now in full swing and getting rather exciting we decided to take the updated F1 official mobile app for a test drive to find out whether it’s good enough to take pole position or whether it ends up in the pits.
With Lewis Hamilton recently taking all the points in Malaysia and in Bahrain, the drivers’ championship has been thrown wide open making the start of the 2014 season all the more exciting. Yet as with any truly global sport many races are broadcast during ungodly hours from different time zones meaning a lot of the action can be missed, especially with our busy lives. Luckily, the official F1 app plugs that gap, and much more besides to bring you the best Formula 1 experience from the palm of your hand. Two races in, there is still a long way to go before any predictions can be made in terms of who will be the next champion driver, but the official F1 app can certainly help you determine the title contenders.
Right from the off, the app is easy to navigate with its clean premium look allowing you to access up to date driver leader-boards, lap times and sector classifications during qualification and throughout official races. If that didn’t get your engines revving, the app also pushes up to the minute news stories and even session commentary via formula 1.com straight to your phone, meaning you are never out of the loop in relation to the latest developments. Now, this is all very well and good but, if you’re a statistic freak (What Formula 1 fan isn’t?) you can upgrade to the premium pass which will give you access to a plethora of additional data. Information such as official live timing of all F1 sessions, in-corner analysis and even the all-important detail of apex exit speeds is featured, with the ability to compare drivers too. If all that wasn’t enough to make you want don a helmet, our favourite feature will – the ability to tune into live team radio transmissions where you can listen in to the exciting driver and team management communications in-race pushes this app up the grid. Fabulous.
The official F1 app is the complete fan’s package available on Android and iOS. Easily accessible and simple to navigate the application provides a fluid user experience on mobile devices giving you a front seat experience into the action wherever you are. The addition of the premium pass content adds to the immersion of race day thanks to the access to mountains of technical data this app gives you, really making you feel part of the pit team.
Overall, a really competent app and one the enthusiast should really look into. We give it 4 out 5 with one star missing as the premium price is a little steep at £10.
