Google has given 200 prototypes of their first 3D smartphone to developers, keen to get them to google 3d smartphonecreate apps for the technology.

The new smartphone has “customised hardware and software” that enables it to create 3D maps out of its owners’s surroundings.

The sensors in the device make over 250,000 3D measurements each second which allows it to update its position in real-time.

Google claimed that applications that would be appropriate for the device include the likes of indoor mapping, mobile gaming and assisting those who are visually impaired in unfamiliar indoor places.

The search engine giant argues that “We are physical beings that live in a 3D world. Yet, our mobile devices assume that the physical world ends at the boundaries of the screen.”

3D Technology

This isn’t the first time that Google have been keen to break the boundaries of the smart device. Google has already launched their Google Glass, plus the firm are working on smart contact lenses that help measure glucose levels in tears.

Many firms have been eager to create technology that is appropriate for every day, practical use. Associate Vice President at research firm IDC Bryan Ma claims that the importance of technology shouldn’t be placed on the hardware or the device itself, but on what the gadget can actually do.
