bluetooth 4.2

BlueTooth 4.2 is expected to shake up the existing technology by introducing new, robust security measures that have otherwise hampered this seemingly incredibly popular communication tool.

Security vulnerability

Besides the faster connection speeds, more features and improved internet connection functionality BlueTooth 4.2 aims to tackle the security vulnerability that 4.1 suffered from called ‘Bluesnarfing‘ which is a term coined for the ability for someone to access a phone or device without the owner having any knowledge.

4.2 will aim to eradicate both the snooping and a new threat posed by retail ‘beaconing’. Retail beaconing is used by retail outlets to broadcast targeted content about in-store promotions, offers and other information via BlueTooth to users devices. The broadcast content is seamlessly transposed to customers phones and it is this process that causes concern for many shoppers.

Little control

Customers argue that they feel they have little control over the content they receive and breaches individual privacy.

BlueTooth 4.2 will deal with this concern by allowing users to determine what content they want to receive and view. The new technology also provides faster connection times to other BlueTooth devices by roughly 2.5 times. It is more energy efficient meaning that the transmitting device can run for longer.

Internet of things

The technology also ensures that it’s somewhat future-proof thanks to its ability to communicate remotely to internet servers. BlueTooth 4.2 will feature protocols that will allow for internet connections – ideal for BlueTooth smart-home sensors that can be configured remotely.

The new variant of BlueTooth will prove to be a much more connected tool which it is hoped that will integrate and become more harmonious with all connectible pieces of equipment around it.
