According to the technology giant at the Las Vegas conference CES, PlayStations will now allow users to play some of their most popular games on their tablets, smartphones or televisions.

The technology functions by streaming data from Sony’s servers, and is due to be launched with a restricted test of the service in America later in January, and a full global release expected to be in the summer of this year.

Sony’s smart TVs will be one of the first devices to support the new cloud-gaming facility. The company also expressed an interest in offering the service to third-party companies, but as yet has not revealed who is to be some of the first smartphone or tablet platforms to get the apps to run on their own gaming facility. However, with the continuous rise of mobile gaming the service is predicted to challenge the industry even further than it already was in 2013.

A benefit of this brand new cloud-gaming service is the fact that players can always enjoy the most up to date versions of the games. However, a variety of tech bloggers at the CES conference noted several limitations of the technology. Criticisms included lags between button pressing, and action and visuals that lacked in good quality graphics and crispness.

Competitors of the service include the lesser-known OnLive, which is limited by the fact it cannot offer as many of the best-selling games that Sony will be able to offer its players.
