The research firm RootMetrics recently conducted a speed test of all of the UK’s mobile service providers comparing the overall speed, reliability, transfer of voice and text data during the first half of 2014.

Findings show that EE was the top performer closely followed by Three, O2 and Vodafone.

Interestingly, the research found that all the networks tested showed significant levels of improvement compared with the previous year.

Testing times

Based on just under one million tests of all the network services each of the service providers speed performance, mobile performance, call performance, data performance and their reliability were put under stringent conditions over a period of 6 months.

Digging slightly deeper in to the overall performance it can be seen that EE and Three are currently leading the pack by some distance. The scores show EE (85.5) and Three (82.7) are well ahead with O2 (68.1) and Vodafone (67) lagging behind.

Clear winner

EE also emerged as the industry leader in terms of text and call quality. Network speed was an overall draw with EE and Three showing the same results.

In response to Vodafone’s lacklustre performance a spokeswoman for Vodafone stated that ‘the company will be spending £1bn this year alone in improving their services’. This statement also comes off the back of the recent OFCOM report which identified Vodafone as having the worst quality calls and coverage for rural users.

O2 be slow

O2 also jumped to their own defence stating that although they recognise the research that has been carried out, their own extensive independent network tests have proven them to be number one for coverage in 17 of 20 key cities across the UK.

With this research in mind, all the above mentioned service providers are currently working on fixing in place their 4G services which should eventually modernise the current networks to provide a better service for all.
