Recent research has demonstrated that certain types of human behavior and characteristics can be tested robustly and analysed using specially designed mobile phone games.
One game in particular is The Great Brain Experiment app which is designed to measure different types of human cognitive behavior.
The game presents falling fruit images that require the player to refrain from smashing the rotting fruit falling from a tree. The game aims to help researchers and scientists understand certain types of human behavior such as psychiatric illnesses or neurological problems.
An app a day
The application was tested against traditional and conventional research methods with results proving that the application was able to hold up robustly against them.
The app is hoped to help answer questions about how human impulse, memory and risk taking change over time and relate to each other with the end goal being able to show scientists trends or factors that point towards certain human cognitive conditions.
Understanding
With the app proving to be an extremely useful platform in understanding the way distraction can highlight inconsistencies with the human cognitive system this will in time lead to new discoveries, such as in schizophrenia in users and the normal progression of healthy ageing where working memory is gradually impaired.
Big numbers
As of August 93,000 people have downloaded and installed the app since it was launched. Of that huge number 65,000 people’s data is now being analysed as part of the research.
Although the application stores no user data and is completely anonymous, if a particular user scores a certain point tally the app will send a message asking the participant if he or she would like to take part in further studies.
