Mobile phone users are to be protected from unexpectedly high bills in a new cap outlined by the government and the four operators EE, Three, Virgin Media and Vodafone.

The new cap, lead by Culture Secretary Maria Miller, aims to protect consumers against theft and mid-contract price rises. The proposed cap follows a meeting she had last month with the operators concerning how they could protect their customers.

“Families can be left struggling if carefully planned budgets are blown away by unexpected bills from a stolen mobile or a mid-contract price rise,” Miller said. “This agreement with the telecoms companies will deliver real benefits to consumers and help ensure people are not hit with shock bills.”

In order to protect customers against theft, the cap will be designed to be similar to the £50 liability cap on stolen credit or debit cards. For mid-contract price rises, consumers will have the option of leaving their contract without inflicting a penalty from their provider.

Expected to go ahead in Spring 2014, the cap follows other technological advancements in the safety of our mobile phones and their bills. At Fortune Frenzy we have a range of ways to deposit and play safely without worrying about security and unexpected billing, including convenient mobile payment services, debit cards and credit cards.
