Woman Hits $43m Slots Jackpot, Discovers Technical Fault, Gets Free Meal

Technical Difficulties Screen It’s every gambler’s dream – seeing a slot light up and seeing the word ‘JACKPOT’ plastered across the screen. Well that’s exactly what happened to one lucky slots player in the US. The jackpot dropped on the slot she was playing and a truly jaw dropping sum was displayed as she was told she’d won a staggering $42,949,672! Unfortunately for Katrina Bookman, not all was as it seemed and her luck wasn’t to last, as a technical fault robbed her of her right to the jackpot.

This August Katrina was playing on a slot machine at New York City’s Resorts World Casino, when the jackpot dropped and informed her she was the lucky recipient of a near $43 million jackpot. This was odd, as the top prize on the game she was playing was only meant to be $6,500. Obviously something was up, and Ms Bookman was asked to return the next day to find out the decision the casino had come to on the matter.

Technical Difficulties

Now, most players assume that if a slot machine says you’ve hit the jackpot, you’re entitled to that money regardless. Unfortunately, at the vast majority of casinos – and this goes for land-based, online and mobile – there’s contractual small print you’re agreeing to by playing there which dictates that you aren’t necessarily going to receive your winnings if there’s a fault in the machine you’re playing on.

These stipulations don’t usually matter all that much, after all these faults usually just end up with someone a few quid down on what they were expecting to pocket. Unfortunately for Katrina, the technical fault in the slot machine she was playing is what caused it to display a huge jackpot win, one she unfortunately wasn’t entitled to.

Meaty Compensation

Steak DinnerYou might think it would be the decent thing for the casino she was playing at to let her keep the jackpot she’d been promised, but unfortunately, that’s just bad business. So the slot was faulty, and she couldn’t keep the $43 million jackpot she was promised; surely the casino was going to soften the blow somehow? Well, they did the right thing, and by way of an apology offered her some compensation.

What form did this compensation come in? To make up for the error, New York City’s Resorts World Casino offered Katrina a free steak dinner. It would be tempting to make a joke here riffing of steak and stake, but honestly I don’t think you’d appreciate it. Especially not nearly as little as Katrina appreciates being parred off with one dinner, when she was expecting to be able to buy her son a barber shop.
